Then and Now
Alright gentlemen, with just 1 more regular season week left in the season, I thought we’d do a little lookback. A lookback on the season, where we started, where we are now, and a bunch of random facts from the season (or at least things I want to poke fun at). Quite frankly, it’ll be all over the place and not nearly as organized as Greg because 1) with the most points scored on the season I sit in 6th place without a pretty little asterisk next to my team name so I’m bitter and 2) because it’s 10pm on Tuesday and well… life. Hopefully, you still enjoy. Here goes nothing…
The two areas I’ll focus on: Draft Grades & Draft Day Projections
Draft Grades: Let’s start with the most obvious, draft grades. It’s always fun seeing those draft grades from yahoo - mostly we all call it a joke because they dock you for not having backup QBs & TEs, etc. But let’s be real, it’s still nice when you get an A or the “Best Draft”. Does anyone ever remember what their draft grade was at the end of the season? Certainly not me.
Draft Day Projections: I love that yahoo does this for us. On day 1, where did Yahoo think our league would end up? Where are we now? Did they move up (higher ranked) or down (lower ranked)? Did the draft grade contradict draft day projections? With strength of schedule, I hope so.
*Table is sorted on Current Rank column | Green highlights - any team that moved UP |
Here’s some key highlights / takeaways I see:
Chipped by Billy G & Kelsey Lohan’s Ghost each had the highest disparity from Draft day to current. Lohan twins are just on the winning side of that + or -... Well done climbing 7 spots!!
Billy G… Sorry, but I can’t let you off without a little commentary. How does one go from projected 3rd place and end up in 10th? I can’t be sure, but I’d say lack of team management. Not even poor management, just a lack thereof. Fun fact: Billy G made the least moves of any team all season - a whopping 5 total!! Gonna need to get engaged next year! (pssst, you also still have $93 in FAAB money - the most of any team. The next closest has $80 and then after that $41!)
So… After doing this, Draft grades are kind of boring. The only thing I can highlight is… well the same as above. The two teams that had a poor grade but are finishing well or visa versa are… Go figure, Billy G with a B+ but projected to finish in 10th and Lohan with a C+ and projected to finish in 3rd. Couple other notable Draft Grade mentions:
From the top 6: LAMARtians and Loch Ness got C & C+ draft grades respectively and are still finishing top 6. It’s notable because only one team got less than a C… Sorry KY. So well done Loch Ness & LAMARtians.
From the bottom 6: Chipped by Billy G & Ballderberg with a B+ & B but are projected to finish in the bottom 6. Not so hot Billy Ballderberg
Hazers - you had the best draft according to Yahoo with the only A in the league, but are projected to finish 5th. You are also tied for 3rd of the least moves made. Does that mean anything? I really don’t know and my brain hurts.
KY - you had the worst draft according to Yahoo with the only C- in the league, but are projected to finish 8th. You made 19 moves which 5th least. Again, correlation? No clue. But I’d say well done finishing 8th despite having the ‘worst’ draft.
Pretty cool to see that of the 6 teams that IMPROVED from their draft day projections 4 of those are making playoffs (which makes sense).
Loch Ness - I should stop whining about my “most points scored but in 6th” - I was literally projected to finish 6th and sure enough, 6th. Good job… Yahoo?
The most accurate projections on draft day were for 4 teams all with 1 or less difference from end of season (or now): Oh Godwin, Loch Ness, Bye Week & Jets Fuel
You may be thinking to yourself “well Cody, there’s still 1 week left, current standings isn’t final” - true, but Yahoo does have Current Projections and the only teams that Yahoo predicts will move from current standings in the final week is KY & Ballderberg - Yahoo predicts KY will surpass Ballderberg to take 7th place. The rest stay the same.
Last minute I added the “Moves” column. I was trying to find a trend there. I thought, I wonder if we summed the top half team’s moves, I bet that beats the bottom halves’ moves… Ie. a lot of moves and good team management means they’re in the top 6. That was not the case: Top 6: 107 moves | Bottom 6: 153 moves… So alternatively, it makes sense a team with a lot of injuries or underperforming players has to make more moves. Some it helped and maybe some not so much. Or maybe it did help, they didn’t drop any further. Or maybe further analysis in smaller groupings could be fun. I’m sure you all can identify some better trends - let us know, post in slack!
I’m sure some of you are screaming things like: “Well I didn’t make moves because I’m in the top 3, don’t hate me for drafting well” or “I had a million injuries blah blah blah!” - Good! That’s the point - send your justifications in slack!
Ok that’s all I got. Now instead of doing a full matchup recap from week 13 - I have the unique opportunity of seeing how the matchup predictions played out from our Cherished Commentary Connoisseur (AKA: CCC or maybe C^3 or just Greg). If you recall, Greg did a special edition matchup preview last week. Below are the matchups he evaluated (in bold was his pick):
Lohan vs Ballderberg
Winner: Ballderberg
Commentary: The anti-jinx did not work
Loch Ness vs Jets Fuel
Winner: Jets Fuel
Commentary: Chase was healthy and I still lost. Nothing more to add. Dammit.
Oh Godwin vs Momo
Winner: Momo
Commentary: LOL Watson kept his streak with 22 points this week. Greg called the inevitable flop by the emerging GB WR - it didn’t happen. Godwin’s team just also severely underperformed.
Hazers vs Ancient Allens
Winner: Ancient Allens
Commentary: This wasn’t even close. Allens destroyed Hazers.
3 for 4 isn’t half bad Triple C!!
Shameful Benching:
LAMARtians: could have won his matchup by ~2 pointes had he started Mike White (26.15). For those of you who don’t know (probably most of us? haha) Mike White is the Jets QB. But no one would have benched Lamar - he exited the game with 1.45 points. So you get a pass LAMARtians.
Notable Mention: Lohan… Had you started G Wilson (Jets WR) instead of Kamara you would have… well still lost, but only by.05!!! Again, no one is benching Kamara for a Jets WR so you’re good too.
Pickup of the Week:
Lol… Mike White, LAMARtians (see above)
Cleveland - Jets Fuel… This was incredible. Cleveland scored 32 points on defense. Which is almost exactly the disparity between him and his opponent this week (myself). Great pickup.
Editor’s Note: This takes way too much time and I sincerely thank Greg for leading it this season. It’s been really fun reading every week!
